Wood is the main material of various furniture, also the constituent of interior and exterior of our homes. That’s a versatile material, which will be very helpful in designing a house, starting from the foundation, floor (stairs), and furniture. Now i would like to discuss about wooden stairs.
Wooden stairs is most appropriately used for rustic, minimalist, traditional or even classic design, that’s relies on the concept, colors and how you design it. Of course, it is impossible to design a staircase without an expert assistance (house designer or architect), we need to determine the correct size, measuring the total rise that would be better carried by an architect. What we can do is only choosing the material start from the stairs, handrail, balustrade, their colors, also the wooden stairs design (Straight, Turned or Spiral).
Straight Wooden Stairs
Straight wooden stairs is simplest, easiest and cheapest option, this suitable in any space area you have, but it will not work in all situations. It would be best if the base of a staircase is located near with the front door, or if you really have narrow space (small home).
Actually the design is too simple and far from elegant, but you can create an incredible look that will make everyone fascinated by the beauty of your straight wooden stairs, as shown in above picture. “Piece wood ladder designed with the impression of floating and embedded in the stone wall. Equipped with plain glass balustrade and dark wood handrail, it just awesome, natural and elegant.”
Turned Wooden Stairs
Turned or straight wooden stairs have similar concept , but turned wooden stairs requires a larger area. There are two option of it, quarter and half landing (determined by the connector). Quarter landing has 90 degrees turn and half landing has 180 degrees turn. Bellow is the example of quarter landing, the design looks more elegant and modern but it’s require larger space area.
The half landing turned wooden stairs (as shown bellow), it would be suitable for you who have limited space, which squeezed between two walls. The wooden stairs lighting will be very useful and needed, not only to beautify the appearance of the ladder itself, but rather on the safety (the crush between the two walls made the stairs had very poor lighting). If you are interested in this design, the image below can be your best inspiration.
Spiral Wooden Stairs
This style looks very luxurious, but it requires a large area, extra cost, and only in accordance, if you placed in the center of the room (if you place in the corner would look very bad, beauty reduced). It’s not the most practical feature at all, the advantages of this design is only the beauty. For going up to the stairs more complicated, especially if you are carrying some heavy equipment.
Wooden Stairs Pros and Cons
The pros about this material, it’s strong, safe, versatile (as mentioned above), easy to work with (easy to manage and designed it) and has a timeless look (it has no season). Wooden stairs are applicable to various home concept.
About the cons, actually it’s slightly difficult to find this material weakness. It’s could be overbearing when used the heavy wood for a central feature.
How About the Cost
Wooden stairs have much advantages compared with other material, but this material has an affordable price range and you can adjust with your budget. The cheapest wood is engineered pine or plywood, that’s perfect for carpeted staircase and painted balustrade, this material will cost you around US $570.
Next is Parana pine, it has effective price too, almost combined with hemlock material. They are the soft wood type that has good stability. You have an extra budget and best quality at all, hardwoods could be best option for you. You may use beech, ash and oak. They have fantastic price, five times more expensive than soft wood.
Unique wooden stairs as seen above looks very attractive, beautiful and elegant. The design is very innovative and unique, will certainly captivate everyone who saw it. This designed with floating ladder with varied size and asymmetrical placement. The concept is quite minimalist with the only simple metal handrail and balustrade. But this unique wooden stairs has some flaws, it has low safety level. It’s really not suitable for homes which there are small children and the elderly. This design require extra lighting and extra caution for any person who cross it.
The picture above is the worst wooden stairs ever. The original ladder at the top, handrail and the balustrade was perfect at all. But the addition of two staircases make it worst, the ladder color and corner line was not matching at all. This design would look better if the wooden stairs has same color and coating, also the edge-line of the buffer painted with matching black color.
